Updated 12/4/2022. We have many expectations about Christmas. How it should happen. We may find ourselves in unwanted places this Christmas. Grieving the loss of a loved one, a job, or our health. No matter whether all your Christmas expectations are coming true or if you’re frustrated by the unexpected, may we all take time to think about the crazy idea that God came down to this world as a tiny, helpless baby. Why would God do this?
On Christmas Eve
On this Christmas Eve I want to say Happy Birthday, Jesus!
Most of us will be busy with family and traditions on this night and tomorrow, so I encourage you to make time to think about that night and what it means to us today. Many Advent traditions have a fifth candle that represents Jesus’s birth. It’s called the Christ candle. So on Christmas Eve we light five candles.
Mary would have had flickering candles or lamp light to give birth by. The brightest light out there was when the angels appeared to the shepherds. No street lights or electric lights; just the stars and lamps. It is such an ordinary and extraordinary story all at once.
God was born into the world He created as a helpless infant. Emmanuel! God with us! The King of Kings and Lord of Lords born in a back water town, and laid in a manger to keep him safe from the animals. It’s comforting to me to know that Jesus lived and grew up in the same circumstances as most of us. Just everyday people living everyday lives.
